Maximizing ROI with Virtual Storage Solutions

It today’s tough economic times, most companies are looking for ways to reduce costs and cut operating expenses. Having seen the significant savings that can be had with server virtualization, many IT departments are eyeing storage virtualization as another way to rein in their budgets.

Similar to server virtualization, storage virtualization relies on the consolidation of storage systems so that there are fewer physical devices to manage. Additionally, storage resources can be used more efficiently via storage virtualization, and less storage capacity needs to be purchased. With these potential savings in mind, this video will give you a few tips to help you drive your storage virtualization savings.

How to Achieve 40 Percent Energy Savings in Your Data Center

Today’s data center managers have many techniques to reduce their data center’s energy consumption, but a mixture of techniques is often required to achieve energy saving targets. The key to judging success of any energy reduction strategy is the ability to accurately measure results along each step of the way. Here, Knowledge Center contributor Joe Polastre illustrates how power management technology can be used to achieve up to 40 percent energy savings in your data center.

IBM Sees Green IT Pastures in Emerging Markets

IBM announces three new green data center deals in emerging markets, which officials say are adopting energy-efficient IT solutions more quickly than their more developed counterparts. IBM says about half of its green data center revenue is coming in from outside the United States. Driving the demand is the high cost of power and the limited access in many of these regions, as well as their tendency to embrace new technologies.

EC says ICT must be 20 per cent more energy efficient by 2015

The European Commission (EC) is calling on the information and communication technologies (ICT) sector to lead the transition to an energy-efficient economy by reducing energy consumption by 20 per cent by 2015.

The Commission wants Europe’s ICT sector to “agree on common methodologies for measuring energy consumption and carbon emissions by 2010″. These could then be used as a platform for the more practical initiatives that would follow.

Government saves £7m through its green IT strategy

The government claims it has saved £7m in the past year through its green IT strategy, and cut the carbon footprint of Whitehall technology by 12,000 tonnes – equivalent to taking 5,000 cars off the road.

Cabinet Office minister Angela Smith told the Greening Government ICT conference in London today that simple initiatives such as extending the lifecycle of PCs, making double-sided printing the default option, and turning computers off at night have contributed to the savings.

The moves are part of the Greening Government ICT strategy announced last year, that has since seen 110 public sector bodies commit to action plans to reduce the environmental impact of their technology. The strategy aims to make the energy consumption of public sector IT carbon neutral within four years.
